Wearing Medieval Costumes This Halloween

The Medieval Ages, also known as the Middle Ages, came before the Renaissance Period. It covered a longer time starting in the 5th century and ending close to the 15th century. As a costume choice women would wear loose clothing, almost shapeless in a way with a tunic for accent. There are many ways however to dress up a Medieval costume especially if you’re planning to use it for Halloween. Here are a few suggestions:
The Executioner
One of the highlights of the Medieval Age was the many battles and wars that occurred. There were the Crusades, rise of Islam, empires that rose and were replaced, famine, and plagues that caused so much destruction and lost lives. The executioner was one of the most feared individuals during this time. He would wear a hooded headgear and was menacing to face. The choices in execution were beheadings, hangings, torture, and non-lethal physical punishments.
The job of an executioner was usually handed down in a family and so that family was most often revered, feared, or shunned by others.

The Evil Jester
Ever wonder where they got the idea for Batman’s nemesis and foe, the Joker? It probably came from a character during the Medieval times, the jester. The jester costume can be either the entertainer who sings and dances or the guy who scares his audience. It would really depend on the mask you get for your jester costume. One interesting fact about the Medieval jester is that he almost had the full freedom to speak his mind that others could not do. He was free to tease the king or make fun of the royal court and get away with it – all in the name of fun.
The Grim Reaper
This was one of the personifications of the devil and would represent the fear of the unknown. The costume looks like a monk’s outfit but with the dark face, skeletal body and scythe. The Grim Reaper was supposed to collect souls and show them where to go for judgment. It has been associated with the Medieval Period because this was the time when the first concept of life after death and the role of morality was developed and grew popular.
The Barbarian
The Barbarian can be considered a personality during the Medieval Times because this is person who is uncivilized. He has no breeding, eats like an animal, and displays no manners at all. In short, he is considered a savage or beast.
The Viking
The Vikings were pagan warriors who were often considered savages because of the way they conducted their “raids.” They followed their own law in a bloodthirsty manner with no sympathy for their enemies. In battle, they would wear a helmet and carry a shield and a mail-chain.
The Colors of The Medieval Age
To help you with your choice of costume, here are the colors of the Medieval Age and their symbolisms:
Red – The color of blood. It was used also to ward off evil spirits and illnesses. It was also a color reserved for the king’s clothing to symbolize his bravery during war time.
Yellow – This color represented the balance between compassion and justice
Blue – Blue was the color that replaced royal purple during the Middle Ages. It was also the color used by a lover to show his fidelity
Gray – The color of servants and peasants
Black – Also the color of the poor and those grieving. At one point, black was also used by the Pope as the color of penance
White – Represents purity, innocence, and compassion
